Headgear

This is used to improve the fit of the top and bottom jaws. It has been used for many years and remains a very reliable appliance for patients who cooperate. Evening and nighttime wear is usually adequate.

Herbst

This is an appliance that is completely within the mouth and is attached to the molars. It causes the lower jaw to function in a forward position. This appliance is an option for those patients who cannot wear headgear and realizes a result similar to headgear in many cases.

Hyrax

Many patients have a narrow upper jaw which causes the upper back teeth to be inside the lower teeth. This appliance will expand the upper jaw and correct the crossbite. It is attached to four upper teeth with an expansion screw across the palate.

Lower Holding Arch

This is an appliance that is cemented in the lower arch to hold space open for erupting teeth. It often can reduce or prevent mild to moderate crowding.

Retainers

Often a removable retainer can be used to correct a single tooth or a small group of teeth that are out of alignment. Retainers can also be used to expand upper jaws and are always used after braces come off to maintain excellent results.

Habit Appliances

Two not uncommon habits are thumb sucking and tongue thrusting. These habits may require a fixed appliance to correct. These appliances usually are placed in the top jaw until the habit has stopped.

Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs)

TADs are tiny anchors made especially to aid in tooth movement. They create more options for improving the positioning of the teeth.
